Today's post focuses on the benefits of utilizing creativity as a vehicle for healthy emotional expression. What I want to discuss here is the method in which you find most useful for working through difficult emotions. I find dance most useful for this as it combines emotional expression with physical movement. The best pieces I danced were the ones I could emotionally connect with. To this day I can't choreograph to a piece of music that doesn't make me feel something. And if I am going through a spell of emotional turmoil finding the right song and moving my bod to it helps me to work out exactly what it is I'm feeling and work through that emotion until I emerge on the other side. It is often said that the best art has the power to make you feel something. I believe this is true only when the creative themself is moving through something as they create. It doesn't always have to be painful - it can be joyful and loving and calm. The deep connection between creativity and emotion has a depth I barely touch on here, and frankly am still learning.
